The bakery sets the rhythm of our day. Its most expensive ingredient is time, and we are generous with it, as we are with the filling of our doughnuts.
Our bakery began at the counter in Smithfield, and after outgrowing their ovens and then Bread and Wine too, we finally found its home under the arches in Bermondsey.
From there, our loaves, doughnuts and Eccles cakes are sent out, some no further than the bakery counter there and others to all of our sites across London. We still shape everything by hand and give our products all the time they ask for.

Our bakery has had a wandering life, from Smithfield to Bread and Wine, and now finally Bermondsey. Tucked beneath a railway arch on Druid Street, our bakery opens its doors to customers from Friday to Sunday. There’s sourdough and seasonal bounty, hot chocolate to guard against a runny nose, and treats for a stroll along the Thames or the Brewery Mile. For some, it’s simply their local bakery.

Bloomsbury is a small but particular part of London. It is in some ways the home of academia in London. It is certainly the home of the London Review of Books. We were curious when their good selves asked us about their cafe which was closed, would we come by and take a look.
One thing has led to another and we are delighted to announce that we have our small Bloomsbury cafe, good things from the bakery, a short wine list, and a happy adjunct to the joy of browsing and books… and that little terrace for a glass perhaps too?
OPENING TIMES
Monday to Saturday 8.00am – 6.30pm
Sunday 10.00am – 6.30pm
On a well-set table, bread is as essential as your knife and fork. It is fundamental. As a fundamental, it must be good – and that goodness must be protected.
We have supported the Real Bread Campaign since day one: true sourdough, not “faux dough”. For such a staple, it is a shame how little attention is paid to the craft of baking. Industrial methods and chain sales have taken honest bread from many, with price (and perhaps a few seeds on top) winning the day. Good bread is worth knowing about and paying for, not least because it never goes to waste.
Our bread has been finding its way onto other tables since St. JOHN Smithfield first began.
Today, our Bermondsey bakery supplies restaurants, cafes and shops across London. If you would like to enquire about our breads and pastries for your business, please reach out to us here or email us at [email protected].
